Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Sooroojdev Phokeer, is presently leading a delegation to the 66th Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, aimed at addressing critical issues facing Parliament, being held from 04 to 05 October 2023 in Accra, in the Republic of Ghana.<\/p>\n

The Speaker is accompanied by the Parliamentary Private Secretary, Ms Teenah Jutton, and Member of Parliament, Mr John Michael Tzoun Sao Yeung Sik Yuen. The theme of the Conference is \u2018The Commonwealth Charter 10 years on: Values and Principles for Parliaments to Uphold\u2019.<\/p>\n

Some 500 delegates comprising Speakers\/Presiding Officers, parliamentary staff and decision makers from across the Commonwealth countries are participating in the event.<\/p>\n

Several topics are being discussed during the Conference namely: the Commonwealth Charter; the role of Parliament regarding the threat of terrorism to statehood; gender quotas in Parliament; 20 Years of the Latimer House Principles on the separation of powers; the meaning of sustainable trade and economic development for small jurisdictions; environmental approaches in tackling energy poverty; and e-Parliaments as an effective mechanism for intersectional diversity and equitable public engagement.<\/p>\n

The keynote address, at the opening ceremony of the Conference on Wednesday 04 October 2023, was delivered by the President of the Republic of Ghana and Vice-Patron of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Mr Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.<\/p>\n

The latter talked of the need for Parliaments to come together and to foster international cooperation through diplomacy, in the bid to advocate for democracy, justice and human rights for all. The Conference will be concluded with the deliberations of the General Assembly on Thursday 5 October 2023.<\/p>\n
