Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Amanda and Jonathan Stancombe travelled to Mauritius to get married and spend their honeymoon on the island in the Indian Ocean at the Belmar Plaza Hotel. During their time there, the newlyweds saw the extent of the island’s problem with stray dogs, which was heart-wrenching for the dog-loving couple.<\/p>\n

But while many of the dogs there are terrified of humans and avoid them as much as possible, an 18-month-old golden labrador mix followed the couple around their holiday resort.<\/p>\n

Amanda and Jonathan fell in love with the stray. They named her Poppy and decided to adopt her and bring her home to the UK. But on the last day of their holiday, Poppy was nowhere to be found and the couple had to leave heartbroken.<\/p>\n

Luckily, a member of the hotel staff spotted the dog and contacted Amanda. <\/a>They were able to get Poppy to a charity called the Strays of Belle Mare and Palmar Beach Welfare Project, and start the adoption process.<\/p>\n

While at the charity, checks revealed she had a transmissible venereal tumour. Thanks to the veterinarians at the welfare project, Poppy was able to receive chemotherapy and has been cured.<\/p>\n

With a GoFundMe appeal, Amanda and Jonathan gathered donations for Poppy’s treatment and the charity. Poppy is now on her way to Heathrow Airport to join the happy couple and their two dogs in her new Colchester home.<\/p>\n
