Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Rizz\u201d \u2013 a colloquial term defined as \u201cstyle, charm, or attractiveness\u201d \u2013 has been crowned word of the year for 2023, Oxford University Press (OUP) announced on Monday.<\/p>\n

Its lexicographers chose \u201crizz\u201d, which also conveys \u201cthe ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner\u201d, from a shortlist of four words and phrases, after help from the public. An online vote had whittled down the list from eight finalists, all selected \u201cto reflect the mood, ethos, or preoccupations\u201d of the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cRizz was chosen by the language experts at OUP as an interesting example of how language can be formed, shaped, and shared within communities, before being picked up more widely,\u201d OUP said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEtymologically, the term is believed to be a shortened form of the word \u2018charisma\u2019, taken from the middle part of the word, which is an unusual word formation pattern,\u201d it noted.<\/p>\n

The publisher added that the word shows the growing society-wide impact of Gen Z and how \u201cyounger generations create spaces \u2013 online or in person \u2013 where they own and define the language they use\u201d.<\/p>\n

The term earned mainstream recognition in June after an interviewer asked Spider-Man actor Tom Holland about his \u201crizz\u201d. The 27-year-old replied he had \u201cno rizz whatsoever\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018Rizz\u2019 v \u2018beige flag\u2019<\/p>\n

It is the second consecutive year that the public have played a part in picking Oxford\u2019s word of the year, after an inaugural public vote last year saw \u201cgoblin mode\u201d prevail.<\/p>\n

In that instance, the public were given the chance to choose the overall winner. An overwhelming 93 percent opted for the slang term describing \u201cunapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly or greedy\u201d behaviour.<\/p>\n

Previous words of the year \u2013 chosen by Oxford lexicographers \u2013 include \u201cvax\u201d (2021), \u201cclimate emergency\u201d (2019) and \u201cselfie\u201d (2013). In the 2023 selection process, more than 30 000 word lovers helped decide head-to-head competitions between four different pairs of words or phrases.<\/p>\n

They selected \u201crizz\u201d over \u201cbeige flag\u201d \u2013 a character trait indicating that a partner or potential partner is boring. The other finalists were \u201cSwiftie\u201d (an enthusiastic Taylor Swift fan), \u201cprompt\u201d (an AI programme or algorithm instruction) and \u201csituationship\u201d (a romantic or sexual relationship not considered formal or established).<\/p>\n

OUP said \u201crizz\u201d has \u201cboomed on social media\u201d and shows how the internet can propel initially fringe language \u201cinto the mainstream\u201d. \u201cThis is a story as old as language itself, but stories of linguistic evolution and expansion that used to take years can now take weeks or months.\u201d<\/p>\n
