Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The MauNDC Registry, an online platform under the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) Project for Low Carbon Island Development Strategy was launched, today, at Les Suites by the Docks, signifying Mauritius’ commitment to sustainable development and innovative environmental strategies.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano; the Head of UN Resident Coordinator Office for Mauritius and Seychelles, Mr Robert Banamwana; the Director of Climate Change, Mrs Sarita Meeheelaul; and other personalities were present at the launching ceremony.<\/p>\n

In his keynote address, Minister Ramano underscored the paramount importance of addressing climate change as a top priority on the Government’s agenda. He highlighted bold initiatives underway to significantly contribute to the global effort in combatting climate change.<\/p>\n

An essential focus, he emphasised, lay in Mauritius’ commitment to substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, outlining a target of 40% reduction by 2030 compared to a Business-As-Usual scenario, as stated in the updated NDC 2021.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, he stressed the Government’s ambition to increase the renewable energy share to 60% by 2030 and phase out coal before the same year. Moreover, he spoke about the commitment made to allocate 35% of the financial needs outlined in the updated NDC, amounting to USD 2.3 billion by 2030, showcasing both governmental and private sector contributions.<\/p>\n

An essential tool in this climate endeavour, he pointed out, is the establishment of the MauNDC Registry, a robust platform designed to facilitate reporting on outcomes, interventions, indicators, and serve as a comprehensive online repository of information for actions aligned with the updated NDC.<\/p>\n

Minister Ramano highlighted that this platform would enable visualising climate action progress and generating reports contributing to the Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) to the UNFCCC.<\/p>\n

The Minister also introduced capacity-building initiatives for 80 stakeholders from Mauritius and Rodrigues on the MauNDC Registry platform. A comprehensive manual was developed to aid their understanding and utilization of its functions, he added.<\/p>\n

He emphasised the registry’s vital role in fulfilling UNFCCC reporting obligations, citing the transition to the online system as pivotal for enhancing efficiency, reliability, and transparency in managing crucial climate-related information.<\/p>\n
