Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>South Africa\u2019s recent legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has raised fear among the regime\u2019s leaders that Tel Aviv could be charged with acts of genocide against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

South Africa filed an application at the UN court \u2013 based in the Hague \u2013 on Friday, saying Israel\u2019s military is engaging in \u201cgenocidal acts\u201d in Gaza. The document says the regime is \u201cin violation of its obligations under the Genocide Convention,\u201d arguing that \u201cacts and omissions by Israel .
\n. are genocidal in character, as they are committed with the requisite specific intent . . . to destroy Palestinians in Gaza. \u201d<\/p>\n

The Israeli Attorney General\u2019s Office is now concerned the world court will charge the regime with genocide in the Gaza Strip, according to Israel\u2019s newspaper Haaretz.<\/p>\n

A senior legal expert dealing with the case warned the military leaders that \u201cthere is real danger that the court will issue an injunction calling on Israel to halt its fire, noting that Israel is bound by the court\u2019s rulings.
\n\u201cThe International Court of Justice has great influence in shaping international law,\u201d Shelly Aviv Yeini, expert on international law, told the newspaper.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts recognition of South Africa\u2019s claim may cement the perception that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
\nThe newspaper said the regime’s lawyers have already begun preparing to deal with the complaint, and a hearing on the matter will be held at the foreign ministry on Monday.<\/p>\n

South Africa\u2019s application asks the ICJ for a hearing to take place next week. It has also asked the court to take \u201cprovisional measures,\u201d including that Israel cease its ground and air attacks.<\/p>\n

The document says the regime\u2019s actions in Gaza are \u201cgenocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group,\u201d according to the ICJ. Israel has killed more than 21,670 people, including over 9,000 children, since October 7.<\/p>\n
