Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, Dr Mohammad Anwar Husnoo, chaired, this evening at the Citadelle Mall in Port Louis, the second meeting of the National Crisis Committee. The aim was to take stock of the situation across Mauritius with Tropical Cyclone Belal evolving in the Mascarene Islands region, and to discuss the way forward.<\/p>\n

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Ravi Meettook; the Commissioner of Police, Mr Anil Kumar Dip; the Officer-in-Charge of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC), Mr Premanand Budhoo; representatives of various Ministries and Organisations; as well as other personalities were also present.<\/p>\n

In a statement following the meeting, VPM Husnoo highlighted that, according to projections from the Mauritius Meteorological Services, active clouds associated with Tropical Cyclone Belal are expected to bring additional rainfall tonight as well as tomorrow. It is also expected that Mauritius will have to deal with additional rainfall by tomorrow afternoon, he observed.<\/p>\n

VPM Husnoo further underlined that the Authorities\u2019 priority remains the safety and security of the population. He pointed out that there is a possibility that the cyclone warning class 1 be waived by tomorrow morning if the trajectory of Tropical Cyclone Belal remains as it is, and that a heavy rainfall warning be issued early on 15 January 2024.<\/p>\n

As such, Dr Husnoo cautioned that all necessary precautions must be taken as regards heavy rainfall. The Authorities, he stated, will meet again tomorrow morning to monitor the situation and take the appropriate measures. The public is advised to listen to all official information which will be communicated according to the situation\u2019s evolution, he added.<\/p>\n
