Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Some 70 active cases of Dengue have been registered in the region of Port-Louis and its vicinity, around 20 cases in the northern regions, 12 cases in Plaine Wilhems, and six cases in Rodrigues. The approximate number of active cases currently stands around 105.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kailesh Jagutpal, made this statement, today, following a multisectoral meeting on Dengue with key stakeholders and concerned authorities in Port-Louis.<\/p>\n

Dr Jagutpal underscored the effects of dengue on a person while indicating that the affected person is hospitalised for one week to provide necessary treatment and prevent the disease from spreading.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that in case the number of patients increases, the Ministry will carry out domiciliary medical visits on a regular basis after a patient has been discharged.<\/p>\n

The Minister underlined the precautionary measures to avoid the propagation of mosquitoes which includes elimination of still water, mowing of grasses, removal of wastes, and ensuring a clean environment.<\/p>\n

He observed that the current climatic conditions are favouring the propagation of mosquitoes. The Health Minister affirmed that fogging exercises are being carried out in the affected areas and sensitisation campaigns are ongoing so as to raise awareness among the population.<\/p>\n

Dr Jagutpal stated that more than 50% of Dengue cases are asymptomatic, and that children and the elderly are more vulnerable and that it can also be fatal in some cases.<\/p>\n

He called on the cooperation and collaboration of each and everyone to take preventive measures and in combatting the viral disease. Some 220 cases of Dengue have been registered since December.<\/p>\n
