Africa-Press<\/a> – Mauritius<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Mauritius\u2019 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) were approved, today, during the first Inter-Ministerial Council on Climate Change meeting which was chaired by the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.<\/p>\n

This announcement was made by the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydas Ramano, this afternoon, at the Caudan Arts Centre, in Port Louis, following the Inter-Ministerial Council on Climate Change meeting held at the same venue.<\/p>\n

Minister Ramano highlighted that one of the key objectives of the NDC is to reduce the local greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by year 2030. To this end, he said that some USD 6,5 billion will be required to successfully implement the NDC.<\/p>\n

Out of these, he pointed out, USD 4,5 billion will be used for adaptation purposes, and USD 2 billion for mitigation purposes. He indicated that local financing to the tune of USD 2,3 billion are expected to come from Government and the private sector, while the rest will be financed from external sources.<\/p>\n

These external resources will be secured with the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, as well as the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, he added.<\/p>\n

The Environment Minister recalled that provisions have been made in the Climate Change Act 2020 for the setting up of the Inter-Ministerial Council on Climate Change, which will intensify Government\u2019s efforts in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n

All key economic sectors will thus be involved in the mitigation and adaptation processes, he observed. Mr Ramano also stated that the Mauritius\u2019 NDC aim at implementing a series of adaptation measures for key sectors such as agriculture, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, blue economy, health and education, among others.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Minister underlined that, as from mid-October 2021, a sensitisation campaign will be organised so as to familiarise youth, teachers, Non-Governmental Organisations, the private sector and all other stakeholders with the contents of the NDC report.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that his Ministry will finalise an Action Plan for the implementation of Mauritius\u2019 NDC, before sending the document to Cabinet for approval.<\/p>\n

This document, once approved, will then be sent to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat so that Mauritius\u2019 NDC are included in the summary report to be presented during COP26 in November 2021 in Glasgow.<\/p>\n

Speaking about other items on the agenda during the Inter-Ministerial Council on Climate Change meeting, Minister Ramano outlined that it was decided that Mauritius would adhere to the United Nations Secretary-General\u2019s global climate emergency declaration call.<\/p>\n

Discussions also focussed, among others, on the long-term development strategies on climate change through the Agence Fran\u00e7aise de D\u00e9veloppement 2050 Facility, he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
