Africa-Press<\/a> – Mauritius<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The main witness in the Michaela McAreavey murder trial in Mauritius was found dead on Sunday October 3. Local police confirmed Raj Theekoy\u2019s body was discovered on wasteland in Beau-Plateau, Goodlands, in the north of the island at around 11am local time.<\/p>\n

Early indications were that police believe he took his own life but an investigation is underway and foul play has not been ruled out. Although local reports stated Theekoy\u2019s wife had reported him missing on Saturday, the Mauritius Police Force could not confirm that.<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman for Goodlands Police station said officers went to his home to break the news to his family after the discovery. Theekoy was a cleaner at the hotel Legends resort in Mauritius where Michaela and her husband John were on their honeymoon.<\/p>\n

Michaela, the only daughter of All-Ireland-winning Gaelic football manager Mickey Harte, was strangled in her hotel room on the Indian Ocean island on January 10, 2011.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old teacher, from Co Tyrone, was married just 10 days earlier when she was attacked as she returned to her room and disturbed a burglary. Two other former workers at the luxury resort, Sandip Moneea and Avinash Treebhoowoon, later went on trial in 2012.<\/p>\n

Giving evidence against the two accused, Theekoy claimed he heard a woman scream before he saw the pair near Michaela\u2019s room. He said he saw Treebhoowoon\u2019s cleaning trolley outside her room at 2.45pm.<\/p>\n

He told the trial: \u201cWhen I was walking away I started hearing the voice of a woman screaming in pain. \u201d
\nTheekoy claimed he heard \u201cAh!\u201d three times. He told the court: \u201cThen I got scared.<\/p>\n

I thought it could be a husband and wife having a fight. \u201d
\nHe later asked the accused what happened before Moneea allegedly threatened: \u201cIf you say anything about this, I\u2019ll drag you into the case.<\/p>\n

\nMoneea and Treebhoowoon were acquitted after a high-profile trial on the holiday island in 2012. Earlier this year the Mauritian government agreed to re-examine the case.<\/p>\n

And the lawyer fighting to get justice for Michaela, Dick Ng Sui Wa, told the media he is \u201cvery confident\u201d. He also told how there will be new evidence but could not say any more as he did not want to risk the investigation. He said: \u201cI am very hopeful.
