Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Online streaming giant Netflix says it is investing in Africa to help new talent emerge and to tell stories that make an impact locally but also resonate with audiences abroad.<\/p>\n

Well-crafted local stories are \u201ca major opportunity\u201d, Netflix\u2019s Africa and Middle East content vice president Ben Amadasun told AFP, on the sidelines of the Forbes Under 30 Summit Africa in the Botswanan capital Gaborone this week.<\/p>\n

Increased investment in local content creation by international players is key for local industries to flourish, he said.<\/p>\n

People in and from Africa \u201cdeserve to see themselves, their lives, their cultures, their languages and their countries reflected on screen\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

If the production is loved locally, it has a better chance of global success, Amadasun said.<\/p>\n

Netflix has bet on diversifying its production in recent years, with series such as Spanish hit \u201cMoney Heist\u201d and the South Korean dystopian drama \u201cSquid Game\u201d.<\/p>\n

South Africa\u2019s \u201cBlood and Water\u201d also enjoyed major global success as the first show from the country to reach number one in the United States.<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s star Ama Qamata was also present in Gaborone as one of those featured on the 2024 Africa Forbes 30 under 30 list of the continent\u2019s most impactful young people.<\/p>\n

South African thriller \u201cHeart of the Hunter\u201d, Nigeria\u2019s \u201cThe Black Book\u201d and \u201cYoung, Famous and African\u201d are other African titles that have enjoyed major success.<\/p>\n

Netflix announced last year that it planned to expand operations on the continent.<\/p>\n

It will include \u201cdirect training and skills development on our productions as well as scholarship programmes and masterclasses that support the younger generation\u201d in developing their projects, Amadasun said.<\/p>\n

He added that Netflix had an \u201cexciting\u201d lineup of African content set to premiere in the coming months.<\/p>\n
