Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Manchester City star Phil Foden says it \u201cwould be really sad\u201d if manager Pep Guardiola were to leave the club next year.<\/p>\n

Having steered his side to a record fourth successive title, Guardiola raised the prospect that he will depart when his contract expires at the end of next season, saying \u201cthe reality is I am closer to leaving than staying\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve not known any other thing apart from him, so it\u2019ll be strange when he does go,\u201d said Foden \u2014 the newly crowned Premier League Player of the Year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to think too much about it. I want to enjoy the things we\u2019re doing now with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foden praised the Spaniard for helping improve his game, saying he \u201csimplifies football\u201d.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old has enjoyed his best season yet at the Etihad, scoring 19 Premier League goals and providing eight assists as City won a sixth title in seven seasons.<\/p>\n

City\u2019s triumph represented manager Guardiola\u2019s 17th trophy since joining the club in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like there\u2019s other managers out there who complicate it a little bit,\u201d Foden said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best advice he gave me this season was just \u2018don\u2019t try and be Phil Foden in every action\u2019, and I feel like that advice really went a long way.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been here for a long time now working with the manager. And I think now is the time for me to step up and try and be the man who\u2019s going to score the goals. I knew what I was capable of doing this season, it\u2019s so good to say that I\u2019ve had a good season and I want to continue to play well.\u201d<\/p>\n

England\u2019s Foden, who scored twice as City beat West Ham to secure the title on the final day of the season, has excelled in a more central role for the club this season, deputising for Kevin de Bruyne \u2014 who missed large periods of the campaign through injury.<\/p>\n

Foden\u2019s form has led to England fans urging manager Gareth Southgate to utilise him down the middle at Euro 2024 next month, but Foden says he is happy to play in a number of positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always said that I like midfield. It\u2019s my best position,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I think I\u2019ve shown this year as well that I can play in any position that the manager puts me. I\u2019ve played off the wide left and wide right and still done a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foden made a personal-best 35 Premier League appearances for City this season and, despite featuring less regularly in previous campaigns, he was happy to wait for his opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never, ever had an intention of leaving. I think I believed in what the manager was saying,\u201d said Foden.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believed in the process. When I wasn\u2019t playing, I knew there was better players in front of me. And I knew the more I grew up and the longer time that went, there\u2019d be opportunity for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

City are widely expected to beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final for the second successive year this weekend, after their rivals endured their worst ever Premier League season.<\/p>\n

But Foden – who grew up supporting City and joined the club\u2019s academy aged eight, rejected suggestions that victory will be straightforward.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know how much work goes in on the training pitch and how much the manager puts in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cViewing the opponent\u2019s games and coming up with tactics. I feel that when people say that, they don\u2019t really understand how hard is to do what we\u2019ve done this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a tough final. We\u2019ve seen last year United didn\u2019t make it easy for us. When it\u2019s a derby, on your day anyone can win so, it\u2019s something we have to look forward to and be at our best if we\u2019re going to win.\u201d<\/p>\n
