Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>EAST AFRICA: <\/b>THE El Nino weather pattern did not have \u201cany influence\u201d on widespread flooding that killed hundreds in East Africa this year, an expert group of scientists said on Friday.<\/p>\n

Torrential rainfall in Kenya, Tanzania and neighbouring nations killed more than 500 people, displacing hundreds of thousands as the deluge swept away homes and swamped roads during the March to May monsoon season.<\/p>\n

The region was hit by floods late last year as well, with researchers saying that the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) \u2014 a climate system defined by the difference in sea surface temperature between western and eastern areas of the ocean \u2014 contributed to the heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s rains were believed to have been exacerbated by El Nino \u2014 a climate phenomenon typically associated with increased heat that leads to drought in some parts of the world and heavy downpours elsewhere. But a study published by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group on Friday found that \u201cresearchers did not find any evidence that El Nino or the Indian Ocean Dipole had any influence\u201d on this year\u2019s extreme rainfall.<\/p>\n

The network of scientists has developed peer-reviewed methods for quickly establishing the potential role of global warming in specific extreme weather events.<\/p>\n

Scientists examined weather data and climate models to compare how rainfall patterns have changed between now and the pre-industrial era as they sought to measure the impact of climate change on the monsoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe extreme rainfall that led to destructive floods in Kenya, Tanzania and other parts of East Africa is becoming more intense, with climate change as one of the drivers,\u201d researchers said. \u201cThe best estimate is that climate change made the event twice as likely and five percent more intense,\u201d they said, adding a caveat that the findings also had to take \u201ca large mathematical uncertainty\u201d into account.<\/p>\n

The study covered the \u201cmaximum 30-day rainfall\u201d during this year\u2019s monsoon season, with researchers pointing out that \u201cheavy rainfall will continue to increase in the region with further warming\u201d. Improve infrastructure The study urged governments in the region to improve infrastructure and protect ecosystems to save lives and help citizens cope with the heightened risk of climate disasters, especially in densely populated urban areas.<\/p>\n

East Africa and the Horn of Africa are among the regions most vulnerable to climate change \u2014 even though the continent\u2019s contribution to global carbon emissions is a fraction of the total. Over 300 people died in rains and floods in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia late last year, just as the region was trying to recover from its worst drought in four decades that left millions of people hungry.<\/p>\n

A WWA study on last year\u2019s floods in East Africa called for the urgent phasing out of fossil fuels and reduction of emissions globally.<\/p>\n

The 2024 long rains in East Africa were exceptionally heavy towards the end of March and throughout April into May, causing severe flooding in Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and other parts of the region. Hundreds of people lost their lives in the floods and more than 700,000 were affected by the floods across all countries due to infrastructure damages, school closures, lost livestock and thousands of hectares of damaged crops.<\/p>\n

Researchers from Kenya, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and the United Kingdom collaborated to assess to what extent humaninduced climate change altered the likelihood and intensity of the rainfall that led to the severe flooding in the most affected region.<\/p>\n

The impacts were most severe in the region around Lake Tanganyika, Lake Victoria, the central Highlands (including Nairobi), southeast lowlands of Kenya and coastal Tanzania between the end of March and most of April.<\/p>\n

Countries in East Africa have been facing disaster after disaster, including prolonged drought between 2020-23, and multiple episodes of torrential rainfall leading to severe flooding.<\/p>\n

These disasters combine to create a complex humanitarian emergency that includes displacement, infrastructure loss, food insecurity, health risks, disrupted livelihoods, and overall weakened resilience.<\/p>\n

Rapid urbanisation in cities across East Africa is amplifying flood risks, especially in large informal areas that are located on flood-prone land, lack adequate structural protections from the rains, and whose residents lack resources to recover and rebuild.<\/p>\n

Land-use changes, including deforestation and conversion to agricultural land are also occurring to different degrees in each of the countries studied, adding to flood risk.<\/p>\n
