Africa-Press<\/a> – Mauritius<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>A Mauritius Fody, a critically endangered songbird, roams wild on the protected island of Ile Aux Aigrette in the Indian Ocean, where conservation projects are returning after Covid-19 restrictions have eased in the neighboring island of Mauritius.<\/p>\n

Picture date: Monday October 11, 2021. The United Nations Biodiversity Conference, known as Cop15, is currently underway. The conference is seen as key to tackling the world\u2019s biodiversity crisis.<\/p>\n

Conference to discuss protection of ecosystems and prevent mass extinction
\nThe UN summit is being hosted by China and takes place online. Countries are meeting to discuss the protection of ecosystems and prevent mass extinction in the weeks before the global climate conference, Cop26, takes place in Glasgow.<\/p>\n

The online summit is setting the stage for an in-person conference next April, when parties will discuss the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and new targets for protecting ecosystems by 2030.

\nAt this conference the 30 x 30 plan will be debated.<\/p>\n

This plan seeks to give 30 per cent of lands and oceans protected status. This would limit biodiversity loss, the UN argues. It is supported by a broad coalition of nations as well as a goal to stop the creation of plastic waste.<\/p>\n

Today only 15 per cent of land and 7 per cent of water is protected. Many environmental groups and campaigns have argued we need more in order to allow nature to recover.
