Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>The G20 leaders have backed a \u201ccomprehensive\u201d cease-fire in Gaza and Lebanon, and welcomed all \u201cconstructive\u201d initiatives to end the Ukraine war and achieve \u201cdurable\u201d peace.<\/p>\n

Expressing \u201cdeep concern\u201d about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the besieged Palestinian coastal enclave, the G20 leaders, in a joint declaration after their meeting in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, extended their \u201cunited\u201d support to a cease-fire in Gaza, as well as in Lebanon, that would enable citizens to return safely to their homes.<\/p>\n

Brazil has been hosting a two-day annual summit of G20 leaders since Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe emphasize the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance and to reinforce the protection of civilians and demand the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale,\u201d the declaration said.<\/p>\n

The statement assumes significance as the Israeli genocide in Gaza entered its second year last month and Tel Aviv has expanded its war to Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s war on Gaza has killed more than 43,900 people and injured nearly 104,000 others. Tel Aviv also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the human suffering and negative impacts of the war, the G20 leaders affirmed the Palestinian right to self-determination.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe reiterate our unwavering commitment to the vision of the two-State solution where Israel and a Palestinian State live side by side in peace within secure and recognized borders, consistent with international law and relevant UN resolutions,\u201d the declaration said.<\/p>\n

As the Russia-Ukraine war surpassed 1,000 days since February 2022, the G20 leaders highlighted the human suffering and \u201cnegative added impacts\u201d of the war on global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation, and growth.<\/p>\n

However, the leaders welcomed all \u201crelevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace, upholding all the purposes and principles of the UN Charter for the promotion of peaceful, friendly, and good neighborly relations among nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Climate change<\/b><\/p>\n

While recommitting to advancing a world free of nuclear weapons, the G20 leaders recognized that the climate change crises affect the world, \u201cdisproportionally burdening the poorest and those already in vulnerable situations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe G20 is well suited to address those challenges through much needed international cooperation and political drive,\u201d said the declaration.<\/p>\n

Call for enlarging UN Security Council<\/b><\/p>\n

The G20 leaders also called for an enlarged UN Security Council that improves the representation of the underrepresented and unrepresented regions and groups.<\/p>\n

The declaration particularly highlighted the need for representation from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pledge to reform the Security Council through a transformative reform that aligns it with the realities and demands of the 21st century, makes it more representative, inclusive, efficient, effective, democratic and accountable, and more transparent,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

\u2018Tax rich to reduce inequalities\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

The joint declaration also endorsed the Rio de Janeiro G20 ministerial declaration on international tax cooperation.<\/p>\n

\u201cProgressive taxation is one of the key tools to reduce domestic inequalities, strengthen fiscal sustainability, foster budget consolidation, promote strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth,\u201d said the declaration.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith full respect to tax sovereignty, we will seek to engage cooperatively to ensure that ultra-high-net-worth individuals are effectively taxed,\u201d it noted.<\/p>\n

It also said the cooperation among the member nations could involve exchanging best practices, encouraging debates around tax principles, and devising anti-avoidance mechanisms, including addressing potentially harmful tax practices.<\/p>\n

Mindful of AI challenges<\/b><\/p>\n

The G20 leaders said the rapid progress of artificial intelligence (AI) \u201cpromises prosperity and expansion of the global digital economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our endeavor to leverage AI for good and for all by solving challenges in a responsible, inclusive and human-centric manner, while protecting people’s rights and safety,\u201d said the joint declaration, adding that the G20 remains mindful of challenges brought by the AI.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo unlock the full potential of AI, equitably share its benefits, and mitigate risks, we will work together to promote international cooperation and further discussions on international governance for AI, recognizing the need to incorporate the voices of developed and developing countries,\u201d it said, noting the role of the UN in promoting international AI cooperation.<\/p>\n
