But after a turbulent period of personal and professional upheaval, Smith has returned to his musical roots with his upcoming album, , a project he describes as his most introspective work yet.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIt really is the result of my initial self-examination,\u201d Smith says. \u201c<\/p>\n

The album, which features collaborations with artists like Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and his son Jaden Smith, marks Smith\u2019s first studio project in nearly 20 years. Infused with gospel melodies and soul-searching lyrics, is a testament to Smith\u2019s journey of self-discovery and resilience.<\/p>\n

One track in particular captures the essence of his message. \u201cOne of my favorite hooks on the album is J Cross singing, \u2018I got the keys to heaven. But I earn them things in hell. I’ll give my life for something, but my soul just ain’t for sale,\u2019\u201d Smith shares. \u201cI just love that concept. The keys to heaven are earned in hell. And it’s like when you’re going through something hard, it’s not because you’re bad or did something wrong. It’s because that’s how it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was like, \u2018D, I’m having a hard time over here, brother.\u2019 He said, \u2018Man, listen, it’s called the Funky 40s. Everybody has a hard time in their 40s. Don\u2019t worry about it. But then you’ll get to the f*** it 50s.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018But I’m 42.\u2019 He told me, \u2018You’ll be alright, brother. You got it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The wisdom from Washington, combined with influences from Tibetan Buddhist Pema Cho\u0308dro\u0308n and historical figures like Nelson Mandela, helped Smith navigate adversity and channel it into his creative work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a certain psychological and emotional fortitude that you cultivate from leaning into difficulty, not trying to run away,\u201d Smith says. \u201cI\u2019ve come to some really beautiful answers for myself\u2014my perception of God and reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Smith prepares to release , he is also gearing up for his first-ever headline tour, which kicks off in June at the Mawazine festival in Morocco and wraps up in Paris in September. The tour will span multiple phases of his life and career, blending nostalgia with his new artistic direction.<\/p>\n
