Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Participants of an online poetry writing competition organised by the President’s Fund for Creative Writing (PFCW) in memory of Late Mauritian Poet, Edouard Maunick, were rewarded today during a prize giving ceremony in Port-Louis.<\/p>\n

The winners categorised under the English, French, Hindi, Tamil, Telegu, Marathi, Creole and Bhojpuri languages received cheques amounting to Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 for the first, second and third place respectively.<\/p>\n

The Director of Culture, Mr Islam Bhugan, the Lord Mayor of the MCPL, Mr Moussa Cadersaib, the Chairperson of the PFCW, Mrs Anita Aujayeb and other personalities were present at the event.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Mr Bhugan lauded the participants for showing interest in the competition and come up with great works. He deplored that interest in reading and writing is decreasing considerably and stressed on the importance to revive creating writings.<\/p>\n

The reading culture will help raise awareness on social, political, economic and cultural issues, thereby contributing to a better world, he said. He therefore called upon parents to encourage their children to adopt a reading and writing culture, adding that literature is very enriching and will no doubt help in shaping their lives.<\/p>\n

For her part, Mrs Aujayeb pointed out that the Fund organises activities all-round the year to promote, propagate and preserve creative writings in all languages and in written and spoken forms.<\/p>\n

The poetry writing competition, is one among, that provide an appropriate forum to Mauritian writers to fulfil their educational, cultural and artistic aspirations, she said.<\/p>\n

President’s Fund for Creative Writing
\nThe PFCW was created in 2000 under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Culture with the aim to promote creative writing in English language.<\/p>\n

In July 2010, under the Fund, new regulations were made to propagate and preserve creative writings to other languages written and spoken in Mauritius.<\/p>\n

The objectives of the Fund are to finance schemes to encourage and assist deserving Mauritian writers wishing to have their creative writings published; the setting up of a network among educational institutions in Mauritius in order to promote creative writing in all genres; and the compilation and publication of regular anthologies and a directory of Mauritian writers.<\/p>\n
