Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>Africa\u2019s digital and creative economies took the spotlight at Moonshot 2025<\/b>, the continent\u2019s leading tech and innovation summit, which closed this week in Lagos, Nigeria<\/b>. The event brought together founders, investors, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore how Africa can build sustainable growth through technology, trade, and creativity.<\/p>\n

Nigeria Unveils Bold Digital Trade Reforms<\/b><\/p>\n

Africa\u2019s digital trade currently accounts for just five percent<\/b> of the continent\u2019s commerce \u2014 but Nigeria\u2019s government says that is about to change. At the Moonshot 2025 event, Nigeria\u2019s Trade Minister<\/b> announced a series of sweeping reforms aimed at helping African businesses scale across borders and increase intra-African trade.<\/p>\n

Key among these initiatives is the introduction of a National Single Window<\/b> and a Trade Facilitation Portal<\/b> \u2014 tools designed to simplify import and export procedures, enhance transparency, and reduce costs for businesses.<\/p>\n

In a move to tackle logistical barriers, Nigeria also unveiled a flat-rate air freight deal with Uganda Airlines<\/b>, establishing a new Air Cargo Corridor<\/b> that cuts export costs to Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa by up to 75 percent<\/b>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reforms are about helping African businesses thrive within Africa,\u201d said the Trade Minister, emphasizing Nigeria\u2019s role as a Digital Trade Co-Champion<\/b> for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Building Momentum for Africa\u2019s Tech Ecosystem<\/b><\/p>\n

For Tomiwa Aladekomo<\/b>, CEO of Big Cabal Media<\/b>, Moonshot 2025 marks a turning point in the evolution of Africa\u2019s tech scene. \u201cThe energy is different,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing founders think beyond local markets, investors taking Africa seriously, and policymakers aligning with the realities of digital business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aladekomo believes the real challenge lies beyond the event \u2014 ensuring that discussions translate into tangible outcomes for startups. \u201cMoonshot\u2019s success will be measured by what happens after the lights go off \u2014 partnerships formed, policies implemented, and capital deployed where it matters,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, he sees Africa\u2019s next frontier in AI-driven innovation, fintech expansion, and youth-led entrepreneurship<\/b>, supported by stronger policy alignment and regional collaboration.<\/p>\n

Creating for Africa, Not Copying Silicon Valley<\/b><\/p>\n

Another key highlight of Moonshot 2025 came from YouTube\u2019s Director of Emerging Markets, Ebi Atawodi<\/b>, who urged African founders to design solutions grounded in local realities<\/b> rather than copying global tech models.<\/p>\n

\u201cBuilding small, intentional solutions that solve African problems is how we\u2019ll drive real impact,\u201d Atawodi said. Her remarks came as the European Union<\/b> announced increased support for local innovation hubs and digital capacity-building across the continent.<\/p>\n

Protecting Africa\u2019s $17 Billion Creative Economy<\/b><\/p>\n

Africa\u2019s booming creative sector \u2014 from Afrobeats to Nollywood<\/b> \u2014 continues to influence global culture. Yet, experts warn that weak Intellectual Property (IP)<\/b> protection is costing African creators billions of dollars<\/b> each year.<\/p>\n

During the conference, stakeholders called for a unified African IP framework<\/b> under the AfCFTA Protocol on Intellectual Property Rights<\/b>, which could help unlock the continent\u2019s $17 billion creative industry<\/b> by safeguarding artists, filmmakers, and innovators.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout proper IP protection, Africa\u2019s creators remain the least rewarded for their global impact,\u201d said one industry expert. \u201cThe AfCFTA protocol could finally change that.\u201d<\/p>\n

A New Era for African Innovation<\/b><\/p>\n

From digital trade to creative rights, Moonshot 2025 showcased Africa\u2019s growing determination to take ownership of its digital and economic future.
