{"id":61580,"date":"2025-11-02T18:32:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T18:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\/all-news\/scientists-develop-dna-tool-to-predict-age-and-origin"},"modified":"2025-11-02T19:54:01","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T19:54:01","slug":"scientists-develop-dna-tool-to-predict-age-and-origin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mauritius\/all-news\/scientists-develop-dna-tool-to-predict-age-and-origin","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Develop DNA Tool to Predict Age and Origin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mauritius. <\/strong><\/span>A team of European researchers, including scientists from Poland\u2019s Jagiellonian University and the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Police in Warsaw, has helped create a powerful new forensic tool capable of predicting a person\u2019s age and other traits from DNA with remarkable accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>The international project, known as VISAGE (Visible Attributes through Genomics), brought together experts from more than a dozen institutions across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ewelina Pospiech, a professor at Poland\u2019s Pomeranian Medical University and former Jagiellonian University researcher, took part in the project and described it as a \u201cmajor success for Poland,\u201d according to broadcaster TVP World.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tool it generated is currently being tested and validated worldwide. This is truly a significant achievement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Pospiech: \u201cThe project aimed to develop methods that would allow it to predict various human characteristics with high accuracy, such as appearance, biogeographical origin and age based on DNA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The forensic breakthrough relies on a chemical process known as DNA methylation, in which methyl group compounds are added to DNA strands to alter gene activity &#8212; a process that changes with age.<\/p>\n<p>Although similar techniques have been in use since 2011, Pospiech told Polish state news agency PAP that they are not always effective in police investigations because biological samples are often small or damaged.<\/p>\n<p>The VISAGE project has produced a more precise model through laboratory and software analysis.
