Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong> <\/span>The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful, called for a stronger, smarter, greener, and more competitive industrial economy to drive Mauritius\u2019 growth and resilience. He was speaking at the 177th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) yesterday at the Caudan Arts Centre in Port Louis.<\/p>\n

The event was attended by the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr Michae\u0308l Yeung Sik Yuen; the Minister of Industry, SME and Cooperatives, Mr Aadil Ameer Meea; the former President of the MCCI, Mr Charles Harel; Council Members of the MCCI; and other personalities.<\/p>\n

In his address, Minister Ramful outlined Government\u2019s industrial strategy, aimed at boosting production, enhancing value addition, and expanding exports while placing sustainability at the core of development. He highlighted key initiatives such as the Energy Efficiency Budget Scheme and the four-year net-zero, nature-positive transition project, designed to support green investments, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen the competitiveness of Mauritian manufacturing enterprises.<\/p>\n

He further emphasised that, amid rising costs and global uncertainties, closer collaboration between Government and private sector remains essential. Reaffirming Government\u2019s commitment to stakeholder engagement, he stressed that collective efforts will be crucial for overcoming challenges and positioning Mauritius as a resilient, innovation-driven industrial hub.<\/p>\n

For his part, Minister Yeung Sik Yuen pointed to the pressures faced by businesses and consumers due to rising petroleum costs and global market volatility. He underlined the need for resilience, innovation and sustained dialogue between Government and the private sector to address these challenges. He also announced that the long-awaited Consumer Protection Bill will soon be introduced in Parliament, alongside ongoing work on e-commerce regulations, reaffirming Government\u2019s commitment to protecting consumers and supporting businesses in a challenging economic environment.<\/p>\n

As for Minister Ameer Meea, he dwelt on the impact of global instability on Mauritius\u2019 trade-dependent economy, while assuring that measures are being taken to mitigate its effects. He underscored the vital role of the manufacturing sector as a key driver of exports and employment, and outlined ongoing reforms, including the forthcoming Industry Bill, aimed at guiding industrial development and strengthening support for local enterprises.<\/p>\n

Mr Harel, on the other hand, noted the increasing uncertainty in both the global and local economic environment. Urging a coordinated approach, he called for measures to attract investment, enhance the ease of doing business, and strengthen key sectors, while maintaining fiscal discipline. He moreover stated that clear policy direction and robust public-private collaboration are crucial to sustaining growth, boosting competitiveness, and positioning Mauritius as a reliable and resilient business hub.<\/p>\n
