The event, attended by key educational and governmental figures, emphasized the urgent need for collaboration in addressing the country&#8217;s diabetes crisis, particularly among youth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mauritius. <\/strong> <\/span>Day 2 of the National Research Week (NRW) 2026, held under the theme Bio-Health, Medicine and Biotechnology, placed strong emphasis on innovative approaches to healthcare and disease prevention. Hosted in the Auditorium Octave Wiehe of the University of Mauritius, the programme featured a presentation by Professor Philippe Froguel, Head of Section of Genomic Medicine at Imperial College London. He focused on the potential of genomic medicine to enhance early detection of diabetes in Mauritius, highlighting its relevance in addressing a key national health concern.<\/p>\n<p>The National Research Week (NRW) 2026, organised by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research and coordinated by the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC), is being held from 20 to 24 April 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The event was attended by the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon; the Chancellor of the University of Mauritius (UOM), Dr Neerunjun Gopee; the Vice-Chancellor of UOM, Professor Kavi Kumar Khedo; the Chairperson of the Organising Committee NRW 2026, Associate Professor Marie France Chan Sun; as well as representatives of higher education institutions and industry leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Froguel, internationally recognised for his pioneering work on the genetic basis of metabolic disorders, particularly type 2 diabetes and obesity, is currently leading a strategic research initiative in Mauritius. In collaboration with local institutions, the project aims to harness genetic insights to transform the understanding, detection and management of diabetes within the Mauritian population.<\/p>\n<p>In his address, Dr Sukon underscored the importance of research and the development of the biotechnology sector, emphasising that meaningful progress depends on strong collaboration among researchers. He expressed appreciation to Professor Froguel for his contribution to advancing early diabetes detection and promoting healthier living in Mauritius. Speaking of the high prevalence of diabetes in the country, he stressed the urgency of addressing the issue, particularly among young people. He noted that ongoing research could enable earlier identification of at-risk youth and improve prevention strategies.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister also expressed hope that Professor Froguel would establish a research centre in Mauritius, which would significantly support national efforts to combat diabetes through precision medicine. He further called on academics to embrace emerging technologies and leverage the expertise shared during the Research Week.<\/p>\n<p>According to Professor Khedo, the event reflects a strong national commitment to advancing research and innovation as key drivers of sustainable development. He recalled that the NRW has evolved into a vital platform that brings together academia, industry, policymakers and the wider community to showcase research, align efforts with national priorities and foster collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>He added that this year\u2019s focus on the health sector is particularly timely, given the rapid advances in biotechnology and medical research that are opening new avenues for diagnosis, treatment and prevention. These developments, he said, are essential for improving health outcomes and strengthening healthcare systems through innovation and practical solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Khedo further pointed out that the University of Mauritius is actively strengthening its research capacity, particularly in health and biotechnology, by promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and impactful research. The aim is to ensure that research extends beyond academia to deliver tangible solutions, inform policy and contribute meaningfully to national development.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Professor Froguel reiterated his commitment to supporting Mauritius in its fight against diabetes. He expressed confidence that his research would benefit both the academic community and the wider population, helping to improve quality of life and reduce complications associated with the disease.<\/p>\n<p>The National Research Week (NRW) has become a significant event in Mauritius, showcasing advancements in research and innovation.
