Kenya and Mauritius have committed to enhancing bilateral trade and intra-African commerce during the Mauritius\u2013Kenya Trade and Investment Promotion Forum in Nairobi. The forum aimed to unlock new investment opportunities and strengthen regional value chains amidst global supply chain disruptions, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for economic growth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Africa-Press – Mauritius. <\/strong> <\/span>Kenya and Mauritius have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade and advancing intra-African commerce.<\/p>\n

This comes after 25 Mauritian companies met with Kenyan businesses during the Mauritius\u2013Kenya Trade and Investment Promotion Forum in Nairobi, on Monday.<\/p>\n

The forum, organised by the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Mauritius, in partnership with TradeSmart Consult Ltd, brought together manufacturers, investors and policymakers for structured buyer\u2013seller engagements.<\/p>\n

The main focus was on unlocking new sourcing, distribution and investment opportunities across key sectors.<\/p>\n

The engagement comes at a time when global supply chains continue to face disruptions, from geopolitical tensions to shifting trade routes, highlighting the urgency for African countries to build more resilient, regional value chains.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the forum, on behalf of Trade PS Regina Ombam, acting director of internal trade Elizabeth Migunda emphasised the strong and growing economic ties between Kenya and Mauritius.<\/p>\n

She noted that both countries are well-positioned to anchor regional trade and investment flows.<\/p>\n

According to Migunda, Kenya remains a strategic gateway to East and Central Africa, offering access to a regional market of over 300 million people, supported by a diversified manufacturing base, improving infrastructure and a dynamic private sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cStrengthening partnerships with countries like Mauritius will be critical in advancing value addition, industrialisation and market access under frameworks such as AfCFTA, COMESA and the EAC,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

InvestKenya (Kenya Investment Authority) director, manufacturing sector investments, Pius Rotich, highlighted Kenya\u2019s position as a leading investment destination in the region, noting the country\u2019s enabling business environment and ongoing efforts to facilitate investor entry.<\/p>\n

\u201cKenya continues to offer a competitive investment environment anchored on market access, strategic location and investor support frameworks. Partnerships such as this create opportunities not only for trade but also for long-term investments that strengthen regional value chains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Despite these opportunities, intra-African trade remains significantly low, accounting for only about 15 per cent of total trade, compared to over 50 per cent in Asia and more than 60 per cent in Europe.<\/p>\n

Director of export promotion and market access at the Economic Development Board of Mauritius, Geerish Bucktowonsing, emphasised the urgency of reversing this trend, calling for a shift toward deeper regional integration and collaboration.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfrica has only scratched the surface of what is possible. We are still trading far more with the rest of the world than with each other; and this must change. The future lies in building African supply chains, investing in joint ventures, and producing goods that proudly carry the label \u2018Made in Africa,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also noted that Mauritius is positioning itself as a strategic investment and trade hub, offering expertise in value addition, efficient logistics and access to international markets.<\/p>\n

This complements Kenya\u2019s role as a production and consumption hub within the region.<\/p>\n

Trade between the two countries continues to grow, with Mauritian exports to Kenya reaching approximately $45 million in 2024, reflecting expanding commercial linkages and significant untapped potential for further collaboration.<\/p>\n

Participants emphasised that strengthening intra-African trade is no longer optional but critical for building resilience, retaining value within the continent, and accelerating industrialisation.<\/p>\n

The two-day Mauritius\u2013Kenya Trade and Investment Promotion Mission includes structured buyer\u2013seller meetings bringing together Mauritian companies and Kenyan businesses across sectors such as manufacturing, textiles, chemicals, furniture, food processing and services.<\/p>\n

The engagements are expected to generate concrete trade leads, distribution partnerships and joint ventures.<\/p>\n

The forum concluded with a call for stronger collaboration between governments and the private sector to translate continental frameworks such as Common Marker for East and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) into practical outcomes.<\/p>\n

This is through increased investment, regional production networks and deeper market integration.<\/p>\n

The push for stronger intra-African trade has been a growing focus for many African nations, particularly in light of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, which aims to increase trade among African countries. Historically, trade within Africa has been low compared to other regions, prompting initiatives like the Mauritius\u2013Kenya Trade and Investment Promotion Forum to foster economic ties and collaboration. This forum is part of broader efforts to enhance regional integration and build resilient supply chains across the continent.<\/p>\n
