Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican health authorities on Thursday reported a further 260 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease.

The recent sharp rise in the daily number of new cases is as follows:

According to a Thursday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 994,757 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 2,860 of them in the previous 24 hours.

2,600 of the tests yielded negative results. Of the 260 positive cases, 134 were women and 126 were men. Their ages varied between two and 71.

As has been the case throughout the first few days of December, the vast majority – 88.5 per cent – of the new cases were from the far south (172 from Maputo city and 58 from Maputo province). There were also 13 cases from Inhambane, nine from Gaza, three from Sofala, two from Tete, two from Manica and one from Zambezia. No positive cases were reported from the northern provinces of Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado.

The total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique now stands at 152,586.

The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested who are positive for the virus) was 9.24 per cent on Thursday, up from 8.35 per cent on Wednesday, and 6.49 per cent on Tuesday, but slightly lower than the rate of 9.31 per cent recorded on Monday.

Over the same 24 hour period, no Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, and four new cases were admitted (three in Maputo and one in Manica). The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres rose from eight on Wednesday to 12 on Thursday (nine in Maputo, two in Inhambane and one in Manica).

Thursday was the fifth consecutive day in which no deaths from Covid-19 were reported. The total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique thus remains 1,941.

39 people were declared to have made a full recovery from Covid-19 – 31 in Maputo city, seven in Nampula and one in Sofala. The total number of recoveries now stands at 149,622, or 98.3 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases rose from 798 on Wednesday to 1,019 on Thursday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 599 (58.8 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 258; Inhambane, 58; Cabo Delgado, 28; Gaza, 21; Zambezia, 19; Manica, 12; Tete, eight; Sofala, seven; Niassa, six; and Nampula, three.

The Ministry also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 72,320 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 4,433,806, while 6,930,248 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
