Africa-Press – Mozambique. The number of new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease has continued to march remorselessly upwards over the past two days, according to the data released by the Health Ministry.

The number of tests carried out, the number of new cases, and the positivity rate were as follows:

According to a Saturday press release from the Ministry, the number of people tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 has now passed the million mark, and stands at 1,001,098. The number of those who tested positive for the virus has reached 153,408.

Of the 443 positive cases diagnosed on Saturday, 242 were women and 201 were men. As has been the case throughout December, the great majority of the new cases – 82.2 per cent – were from the far south (214 from Maputo city and 150 from Maputo province). There were also 38 cases from Inhambane, 27 from Gaza, 10 from Manica, two from Cabo Delgado and one each from Nampula and Tete.

Over the same 24 hour period, no Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, but four new cases were admitted, two in Maputo and two in Inhambane. The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres rose from 13 on Friday to 17 on Saturday. 12 of these patients were in Maputo, four in Inhambane and one in Manica.

12 Covid-19 patients were declared to have made a full recovery on Saturday (11 in Maputo province and one in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to149,555, which is 97.5 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The Ministry reported no deaths from Covid-19 on Saturday. On Friday, the death of a female 19-year-old patient was reported by the Ministry of Health. The total Mozambican Covid-19 death toll thus stands at 1,942,

Since the number of new cases over the past few days has greatly exceeded the number of recoveries, the number of active Covid-19 cases has also grown sharply, rising from 1,076 on Friday to 1,507 on Saturday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 721 (47.8 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 491; Inhambane, 106; Gaza, 75; Manica, 40; Cabo Delgado, 24; Zambezia, 18; Sofala, 12; Tete, nine; Niassa, six; and Nampula, five,

The Ministry also reported that, in the previous 24 hours, a further 69,400 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. To date, 4,577,292 people have been fully vaccinated against the disease, and 7,063,360 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
