Africa-Press – Mozambique. President Filipe Nyusi has admitted the possibility of the government barring unvaccinated people from public places to stop the spread of the new Omicron Covid-19 variant.

“We could at any time limit [the movement of] people who have not had the vaccine,” Filipe Nyusi said, quoted today by the newspaper Notícias, the main Mozambican daily.

The president considers the current scenario worrying, and points out that the number of infections has been rising in recent days in the country.

“I was told a few days ago of an alarming scenario. In a group of 200 people, gathered together in a small place, 133 were tested. Of these, more than 60 were infected,” he remarked.

Vaccination incentive

Filipe Nyusi urged Mozambicans to get vaccinated against Covid-19, noting that the country had received “a lot of support” in terms of vaccine doses.

“I ask that you present yourselves [at the vaccination posts],” the Mozambican head of state urged. Mozambique has registered 1,945 deaths among its more than 153,787 positive Covid-19 cases.
