Africa-Press – Mozambique. Travellers from Mozambique are now permitted to travel to Portugal as the latter’s government has decided to lift the air travel suspension for arrivals from the African country.
Portugal’s government has confirmed through a statement that the air travel suspension with origin or destination in Southern African countries has been abolished, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Such changes have been approved as part of the rules to manage the current epidemiological situation.
However, Portugal’s authorities have clarified that only essential trips will be permitted to operate, including trips for professional, study, health or family reunion purposes.
In addition, travellers from Mozambique as well as several other African countries will be obliged to follow quarantine rules upon their arrival in Portugal.
“Upon arrival in Portugal, travellers from Mozambique and six other southern African countries must undergo a period of prophylactic isolation of 14 days. This isolation period ends for travellers who test negative for a SARS-CoV-2 screening test performed on the third day after arrival,” the statement reads.
Portugal’s government announced that the recent changes will be kept in place until January 9 and will be updated, taking into account the Coronavirus situation in different world territories.
“It is recalled that under the measures previously approved by the Government and in force since December 1, all travellers with destination or transit in the national territory must submit a test with negative laboratory result to SARS-CoV-2 before air boarding (performed within 72 hours, if PCR type; or within 48 hours, if rapid antigen type) or the EU COVID Digital Certificate in test or retrieval mode,” the statement clarifies.
Based on the data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1,242,500 people have tested positive for the Coronavirus and its new strains since the start of the pandemic, while a total of 18,823 people have lost their lives due to the virus, during the same period.
WHO figures also reveal that there have been registered over 36,500 COVID-19 infection cases in the last seven days, and 125 people have died.
Portugal has also been affected by the spread of the Coronaviurs’ Omicron variant, while authorities are imposing stricter measures in order to prevent a surge in the number of infections.
On Friday, the National Health Agency stressed that Omicron is now the dominant strain in Portugal, with over 12,000 daily COVID-19 cases recorded on the same day.
Portugal’s government has also tightened its restrictions ahead of the New Year’s Eve celebrations, following the example of other European countries, such as imposing mandatory negative test requirements for entering restaurants and public celebrations and cutting gathering capacities, as a response to the COVID-19 Omicron variant.
