Mozambique: EDM wants to extend electricity network to Tanzania

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique Electricity (EDM) is preparing a feasibility study on expanding the country’s electricity grid to neighbouring Tanzania, a company source announced on Friday.

“Our intention is to make the regional connection with Tanzania, which will also be associated with other sources of production [in addition to the national grid],” Daniel Guambe, director of Electrification and Projects at EDM, told reporters attending the inauguration of an electricity distribution network in the district of Namuno, Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique.

Although potential costs and dates are still unknown, Daniel Guambe said that the feasibility study is underway, stressing that the project was part of an ambition to continue to “expand the backbone” of the electricity grid in response to new economic challenges that Mozambique is experiencing due to the exploitation of mineral resources.

“Our geographical position allows us to use our corridors for regional integration, and this project will contribute to our objective: to transform Mozambique into an energy production hub,” Guambe explained.

In 2020, EDM, a public company, announced that it would invest US$1.6 billion in a five-year business plan in which the expansion of the electricity grid was a priority.

Recently, the Mozambican Head of State indicated that, by the end of December 2021, 44% of the country’s population had access to electricity, adding that the goal was to reach 64% penetration by 2024.
