Africa-Press – Mozambique. The African Development Bank (AfDB) is investing 60 million meticais in chicken production kits for new breeders in Zambézia and Niassa provinces, in the centre and north of the country, O País reports.
“In all, there are 290 new beneficiaries, with the emphasis on young people and women,” Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Ludovina Bernardo explained. “The selection criteria for the beneficiaries were made in compliance with all possible transparency in a joint effort with the Institute of Small and Micro Companies, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce unit which is coordinating the project.”
To reduce imports and improve the trade balance, the country needs to be self-sufficient in chicken production. The project expects to improve the trend in chicken production in the two provinces.
Close to US$3 million is also to be spent by the ADB, in partnership with the government, on the construction of feed production plants in Zambézia and in Niassa.
The Zambézia plant will have production capacity of five tons of chicken feed per hour, while the Niassa plant will have production capacity of just 1.5 tons.
