Africa-Press – Mozambique. Maintenance works on the drainage system on Avenida do Trabalho in Maputo city begins on Monday, and will last four weeks, during which time the section between Rua 2023 and Rua 2019 will be closed to traffic, Maputo municipality has announced.
A statement sent to ‘O País’ recommends that drivers use Estrada Nacional Number 4, between the viaduct and Praça 16 de Junho, as an alternative route into and out of Maputo.
Users who use the road praise the initiative, although they fear the accompanying congestion.
“The idea is good – we really need it. I’ve already damaged my car in one of the potholes. The only problem is the traffic. Early in the day, traffic it is already intense and people who use the EN4 to escape the congestion there, come here. Imagine all of us on that road!” said Clésio Langa.
Public transport drivers who use the road on a daily basis already anticipate their revenues dropping dramatically due to time wasted in traffic jams getting into and out of the city centre.
“It will hurt to start with, but we’ll get used to it, and in the end we’ll have a road fit for circulation,” driver Ivo Carlos concluded.
