Africa-Press – Mozambique. Empresa Electricidade de Moçambique (Mozambique Electricity – EDM) has so far reported losses of around US$5 million from damage to infrastructure caused by Tropical Cyclone Gombe in Nampula province.

The director of Revenue Protection and Loss Control at EDM, Amilton Álisson, indicated that the figures were provisional, as work to accurately assess total losses was still underway.

Speaking on Rádio Moçambique’s Café da Manhã programme, Álisson acknowledged that damage caused by bad weather would leave some districts in Nampula without electricity for a time.

“Ilha de Moçambique, Mogincual, Meconta and Muecate do not have electricity, but we do have generators supplying energy to critical places like hospitals,” he said.

“We think that we will be able to re-establish connections in one or two districts today, possibly Mogincual and Muecate. For Ilha de Moçambique, we will probably restore supply by Saturday at the latest,” Álisson added.
