Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s National Elections Commission (CNE) has approved a proposal that schedules 11 October 2023 as the date for the sixth municipal elections across the country, according to a report in the independent daily “O Pais”.
The approval of the date is in full compliance with the legal framework, which states that the date for elections must be announced at least 18 months ahead of the polls.
The CNE’s proposal will be delivered to the Council of Ministers which must formally confirm the date. There is no reason for the Council of Ministers to disagree with the CNE’s date.
The last local elections were held on 10 October 2018, when the ruling Frelimo party won 44 out of the 53 municipalities.
Renamo, the country’s main opposition party, won seven municipalities including two provincial capitals, namely Quelimane in the central province of Zambezia and the northern city of Nampula
The second opposition party, the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) maintained control of its stronghold, the port city of Beira, in the central Sofala province.
The 2023 municipal elections will be the first test of the new CNE and its chairperson Anglican Bishop Carlos Matsinhe.
