Africa-PressMozambique. Capacity to hospitalise Covid-19 patients at the Polana Caniço General Hospital, the leading isolation centre in Maputo city and the country, has been exhausted.

National Director of Medical Assistance, Luísa Panguene, on Tuesday (June 29) revealed that all 100 Covid-19 beds in Polana Caniço were occupied, as a result of the recent increase in admissions.

By Tuesday, the country’s capital had 120 patients hospitalised as a result of Covid-19, out of a total of 176 across the country. In fact, health authorities yesterday reported the hospitalisation of 50 more patients, 36 of them in Maputo.

Panguene noted that health units in Tete province are also under pressure, with 21 of 38 beds prepared for Covid-19 patients already occupied. In anticipation, a further 32 beds are to be installed at the newly opened Health Centre No. 2.

The situation demands that Mozambicans redouble their efforts to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Panguene said.

Mozambique had by Tuesday [June 29] a cumulative total of 75,828 diagnosed cases of the new coronavirus, of which 71,186 (93.9%) were deemed fully recovered, and 872 patients succumbing to the respiratory disease.
