Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Ressano Garcia border crossing in Moamba district, Maputo province, has been operating 24 hours a day since yesterday, a measure aimed at reducing the queues seen there recently.
Previously, the Ressano border post would only operate 24 hours a day during festive seasons, such as the end of the year and Easter.
Yesterday, representatives of the governments of Mozambique and South Africa participated in the official inauguration of the new schedule.
On the occasion, the authorities of both countries also launched a special protection and security plan called “Easter 2022”, which provides for high levels of security guaranteed by joint operations in border areas.
Speaking at the ceremony, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of the Interior (MINT), Victor Domingos Canhemba Júnior, said that the new measure will address the problem of congestion resulting from the increase in cross-border flow in both directions and the number of trucks heading to the Port of Maputo.
The adoption of the new schedule is also the result of requests from Mozambican businesspeople seeking to speed up imports and exports.
From the perspective of the private sector, the extension of the opening hours of the border was also justified by the fact that thousands of people and heavy trucks converge at Ressano Garcia, the busiest border crossing in the country.
