Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Military Mission to Mozambique (SAMIM) has a new mandate in its mission to fight against terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
The move was agreed on Tuesday at a virtual extraordinary summit of the Troika of the SADC Organ on Political, Defence and Security Cooperation, plus SAMIM personnel contributing countries (PCC) and Mozambique.
“The summit approved the transition of SAMIM from Scenario 6, (Rapid Deployment Capability) to Scenario 5 (Multidimensional Force), with a robust mandate,” states the final communiqué issued at the end of the summit, without further details on the start of the transition and the duration of the new mandate.
The summit also commended the SAMIM leadership, including the men and women on the ground, for their sacrifices and commitment to the fight against terrorism in some parts of Cabo Delgado province.
At the SADC extraordinary summit in January, in the Malawian capital Lilongwe, the regional block decided to extend the mission’s mandate with the associated budgetary implications. Though the statement did not say how long the SAMIM mandate would be extended for, the extension would mean SAMIM forces remaining in Mozambique until at least mid-April.
