Mozambican arrested in Lebombo, South Africa, on suspicion of trafficking two AK-47 rifles

Africa-Press – Mozambique. South African police (SAPS) have detained a 32-year-old Mozambican at the Lebombo border post with Mozambique on suspicion of trafficking AK-47 assault rifles and ammunition, it was announced Friday.

A police statement said that the arrest took place at around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday during the inspection of a silver Toyota Hilux bakkie with Mpumalanga registration crossing from Mozambique into South Africa

“The aforementioned vehicle was stopped and during a search, two AK-47 rifles were found underneath a sponge, as well as two magazines with ammunition,” the statement said.

According to the security force, the Mozambican was arrested for “illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as possible smuggling of firearms and ammunition”, and is due to appear before a judge at Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 19 April.
