Africa-PressMozambique. The French Government has donated 108,000 doses of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca to Mozambique, strengthening the country’s vaccination programme.

The 108,000 doses were delivered to the Mozambican Ministry of Health (MISAU) through the COVAX global initiative. COVAX, which is co-led by CEPI, GAVI, the Vaccines Alliance and the World Health Organization, is a global initiative with governments and manufacturers to ensure COVID-19 vaccines are available worldwide to both higher-income and lower-income countries.

The donation will be used to boost the MISAU’s National Vaccination Plan, which has already carried out two phases of vaccinations to priority groups such as health professionals, primary school teachers as well as the elderly.

The Mozambican Minister of Health, Armindo Tiago, praised the importance of this donation, considering that these vaccines are vital to the country and will contribute to a better response in the fight against the pandemic.

The French Ambassador to Mozambique, David Izzo, gave assurances that France remains committed to collaborating on global efforts to support Mozambique, its citizens and other African countries, towards achieving vaccine delivery targets. The donation of AstraZeneca vaccines to Mozambique pursues the objective of equitable distribution of vaccines worldwide. France is committed to donating 60 million doses over the next few months.

Barbara Nel, Africa Region Country President, AstraZeneca, said: “The arrival of 108,000 doses of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca in Maputo is very good news for the people of Mozambique.

“On behalf of AstraZeneca, I would like to thank the French Government and our partners at the COVAX coalition, the World Health Organization, Gavi, CEPI and UNICEF for making this possible. “COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca accounts for over 90% of COVAX supply to date, with more than 80 million doses delivered to 127 participating countries, including more than 38 African countries. “All partners in the vaccine alliance are working round the clock to ensure that as many COVID-19 vaccines can get to African nations as soon as possible. Today’s arrival in Mozambique demonstrates the value of governments, industry and others working together to address our continent’s urgent need.”
