Africa-Press – Mozambique. The government will do everything in its power to ensure that the legal instruments that protect the freedom of the press, recently deposited in the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, are speedily approved.

The commitment was made yesterday by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, in a message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, held this year under the motto “Journalism and Fundamental Freedoms in the Digital Age”.

The president’s message notes that freedom of the press is a fundamental right that allows information of political, economic, social, humanitarian and cultural interest to reach the public, in order to keep society well informed about events.

Natural disasters caused by climate change, as well as the terrorist actions in the north of Cabo Delgado province are examples of matters that deserve a treatment free of vice, in the light of what is enshrined in the Fundamental Law concerning freedom of expression and information.

“A well-informed society requires media professionals to carry out their activity with professionalism in the transmission of reliable information, embracing the most modern information and communication platforms of the digital age that guarantee the dissemination of information content in real time,” President Nyusi said.

The President appealed to journalists to commit themselves increasingly to the production of quality content, maintaining respect for the privacy and dignity of sources of information.
