Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican and Ghanaian governments on Monday signed in Accra two instruments which mark the launch of bilateral cooperation aimed at concrete results.
One is a general Cooperation Agreement between the two countries, and the other is an accord on waiving entry visas for holders of diplomatic and service passports. Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and his Ghanian counterpart, Nana Akufo Addo, witnessed the signing ceremony.
The two Presidents drew up guidelines for the creation of a Joint Standing Commission on Cooperation, which is to meet annually to coordinate and monitor all the steps taken towards the economic cooperation desired by Nyusi and Akufo Addo.
The new agreement marks a transition away from ties based on historic relations of brotherhood and friendship to an economic approach based on commercial exchanges of common benefit.
“With this visit”, Nyusi said, “we want to drive our relations so that they are oriented towards results. Today we had short but very productive meetings”.
He added that Mozambique is interested in Ghana’s experience in agriculture, energy (including petroleum and gas), tourism, sport and the environment. The agreements should be implemented immediately
The two Presidents also discussed the fight against terrorism in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, the mechanisms for consolidating peace, as well as the impacts of climate change and of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Akufo Addo claimed that the agreements were the highest point reached in the relations between Mozambique and Ghana. He said the joint missions to be created will be instructed to seek palpable results which guarantee trade and should stimulate market integration.
He also promised that Ghana will support Mozambique’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. He was sure that the interests of Africa would be well represented if Mozambique occupies that seat.
