Africa-Press – Mozambique. Speaking on Thursday at the opening of the MMEC Conference (Mozambique Mining, Oil & Gas and Energy), Mozambique’s Minister of the Economy and Finance, Max Tonela, reinforced the country’s commitment to the climate agenda.
In his speech, the minister highlighted the government’s special attention to the development of renewable sources, the diversification of the national energy matrix, and the achievement of goals aimed at ensuring universal access to electricity” and noted that “Renewable energies are still an intermittent source and natural gas presents itself as the alternative that will ensure baseload energy for the energy transition”.
Tonela also hinted at promoting programs to raise investment levels to increase electricity availability and encourage private sector participation, both for the construction of large-scale solar plants connected to the national transmission grid and for initiatives aimed at the massification of access in rural areas.
The 8th edition of the event, taking place in the capital Maputo, is widely acknowledged as one of the most emblematic forums promoted by Mozambique and aims to promote debates on relevant topics on the challenges and investment opportunities of the mineral resources and energy sector.
The conference comes at a time when Mozambique is once again becoming part of the focus of the global energy industry given the sector turmoil and uncertainty created by the Russia- Ukraine conflict. It also highlights the role that Mozambique could play in South Africa’s energy transition certainly to be discussed in the upcoming COP27.
