Africa-Press – Mozambique. Construction work on the Moamba-Major dam in Maputo province will resume next year, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, said in Maputo yesterday.
Budgeted at around US$572 million, the dam will reinforce water supply for the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Region, which currently depends on the Corrumana and Pequenos Libombos dams.
Speaking after visiting the infrastructure and inspecting improvements on some roads there, Minister Mesquita recalled that the construction of the Moamba Major dam was interrupted in 2017 when the Government of Brazil cut funding with the project only 10% complete.
Moamba Major is a structuring initiative and a government priority, Minister Mesquita said, adding that negotiations over finance for the execution of the works are at an advanced stage.
Mesquita pointed out that guaranteeing the water supply is one of the government’s primary responsibilities, hence the importance of continuing to build dams.
The Moamba-Major dam was particularly important, he added, because demand for water in the Greater Maputo metropolitan and surrounding areas had increased dramatically.
