At least 434 people were killed in road accidents in the first half of 2022 across Mozambique, forcing the authorities to resume alcohol testing and introduce speed control methods, announced the Commander-General of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) Bernardino Rafael on Tuesday.
According to the police commander-general who addressed a special ceremony honouring police officers in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, the country has recorded 492 road accidents nationwide in the first six months of 2022, most of which took place on the national EN1 road, the main road in the country.
“In the province of Maputo alone, 96 people died against 67 in the same period last year as the result of road accidents, recorded mainly on the EN1,” said Rafael, adding that more than 60 percent of the cases registered in Maputo province were related to excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages.
He said human behaviour continues to be one of the main causes of road accidents in the country and provincial commands of the PRM were instructed to resume alcohol testing for drivers, which had been suspended since 2020 due to COVID-19.
Speed control posts will also be introduced and implemented in Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane provinces and gradually throughout the country, said Rafael.
