Voter registration for local elections starts in February

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The registration for the 2023 municipal elections in Mozambique will take place between February 20 and April 5, the government said this Tuesday.

The municipal elections are scheduled for 11 October 2023.

The period defined for voter registration was approved by the Council of Ministers and, as established by law, is the result of a proposal by the National Elections Commission (CNE), spokesman Filimão Suaze explained to the media after a cabinet meeting in Maputo.

“The voter registration for the sixth municipal elections will take place in the areas of administrative jurisdiction of the local authorities,” Suaze said.

Mozambique begins a new electoral cycle in 2023, with the holding of municipal elections, followed by general elections (presidential, legislative, provincial and possibly district) in 2024.

According to CNE data advanced in June this year, Mozambique needed 18.7 billion meticais (about €287 million at current exchange rates) to cover the cost of the next electoral cycle.

Of the total, according to the CNE, 3.2 billion meticais (€49 million) would be earmarked for the 2022 financial year, and 6.7 billion meticais (€103 million) for activities in 2023, the year in which the country holds the local elections.

Meanwhile, 8.7 billion meticais (€134 million) are needed for the 2024 general elections, which should, for the first time, include district elections, despite doubts about their feasibility raised by President Filipe Nyusi at the time.
