Only nine new Covid-19 cases reported on Sunday

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Over the past weekend, the Mozambican health authorities reported only 28 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, 19 on Saturday and nine on Sunday.

According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, of the new cases reported on Sunday, who were all of Mozambican nationality, five were men and four were women.

Their ages varied between eight and 51 years. There were four cases from Gaza, two from Sofala, and one each from Maputo city, Niassa and Nampula. No cases were reported from any of the other six provinces.

Since the start of the pandemic, 1,375,745 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 405 of them in the previous 24 hours. 396 of these tests yielded negative results, and the nine who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 229,887.

The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be carrying the coronavirus) fell from 2.7 per cent on Saturday to 2.22 per cent on Sunday.

No Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital on Sunday, and no new cases were admitted. The number of people undergoing medical treatment in the Covid-19 wards was 13 on both Saturday and Sunday.

Five of these patients were in Niassa, four in Maputo city, three in Gaza and one in Zambezia. One of these patients was in intensive care, receiving supplementary oxygen.

The Ministry release reported no further deaths from Covid-19 on either Saturday or Sunday. The total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remained 2,119.

Seven recoveries from the disease were reported on Sunday, all in Zambezia. The total number of recoveries now stands at 227,390, which is 98.91 per cent of all Covid-19 cases ever diagnosed in Mozambique. The number of active cases of Covid-19 rose slightly from 276 on Saturday to 278 on Sunday.

The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Sofala, 72; Zambezia, 62; Maputo city, 35; Niassa, 25; Nampula, 21; Gaza, 19; Tete, 16; Cabo Delgado, 11; Inhambane, nine; Maputo province, six; and Manica, two.

The Ministry release also reported that on Sunday a further 1,021 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,645,888, which is 96.3 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
