Africa-Press – Mozambique. International consultants are evaluating the sustainability of the development of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project, an infrastructure project with generation capacity of 1500MW to be implemented in the district of Marara, Tete province, Notícias reports.
On Friday, the Implementation Office of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project took a team of consultants to Marara to start public consultation meetings on the projects’ possible impacts, especially those concerning the resettlement of the families affected.
The consultants involved – from Brazil, the United States, Sweden and South Africa – will seek to assess possible problems associated with the project according to the best international practices, avoiding pitfalls that have marred previous projects implemented in the province and in Mozambique generally.
Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric dam will be built on the Zambezi river at Marara, 61 kilometres downstream from the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric (HCB) dam and 70 km from the city of Tete. It will be 700 metres long and rise 86 metres above its foundations, with 13 floodgates.
