Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Port of Beira, in Sofala province, plans to increase its container handling capacity from 300,000 to 700,000 TEU’s (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year.

The increase will be possible thanks to equipment modernisation and port expansion works.

Deputy administrator of Cornelder de Moçambique, the Port of Beira concessionaire, says that holding areas will be expanded, in order to improve container storage capacity and facilitate access.

The expansion seeks to address developments in the regional market, Libombo said.

“We are a key player in the development of the region and hinterland countries. We serve markets in Zimbabwe, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Malawi. At the beginning, in 2000, we handled around 35,000 containers per year at the container terminal. Last year, our best ever, we handled 278,000 containers,” he noted.
