Africa-Press – Mozambique. The former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, is in London to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on behalf of Filipe Nyusi, the current Mozambican head of state.

It was Joaquim Chissano who, as president, ratified Mozambique’s accession to the Commonwealth in 1995, and says the country’s accession to that body was a positive move.

“We have increased our presence in the world and multiplied friendships,” Chissano told Rádio Renascença, speaking from London.

Four years later, in 1999, Elizabeth II visited Maputo for “a one-day visit, but it was quite remarkable”.

The Queen “showed solidarity and affection for the Mozambican people, who received support from England, through the government of Margaret Thatcher,” Chissano recalled.

From the contact he had with the British monarch, the former president recalls best her “simplicity”.

Chissano will attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on behalf of Filipe Nyusi, the current president of Mozambique.
