Africa-PressMozambique. Former president of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza, will appear as a deponent in the so-called ‘hidden debts’ case, a process which will be televised, Carta de Moçambique reports. The current president, Filipe Nyusi, who was Guebuza’s defence minister at the time, is not on the list of deponents.

Armando Guebuza will not be notified directly. The Supreme Court must by law send an official letter to the Council of State, chaired by Filipe Nyusi, and of which Guebuza is a member, requesting authorisation for the former president to be heard.

The trial is due to start on August 23.

According to a notification from the Court to one of the parties, to which ‘Carta’ has had access, the first defendant to be heard will be Cipriano Mutota, a former member of the Mozambican Intelligence Services (SISE). The last defendant on the list is Antônio Carlos do Rosário, on September 1.

The Maputo Judicial Court will hear two defendants per day. Ndambi Guebuza and Bruno Langa will be heard on August 24; Sérgio Namburete and Inês Moiane on the 25th; ngela Leão on the 30th of August; and Gregório Leão and António do Rosário on September 1.

On September 2, the Maputo Judicial Court will begin hearing dozens of deponents in Maputo Maximum Security Prison [“BO”] which, 19 years ago, hosted the trial in the murder of journalist Carlos Cardoso.

Among the deponents, in addition to Guebuza, are Victor Bernardo, Henriques Gamito, Helder Pateguana, Apolinario Panguene, Celeste Matavel, Joana Matsombe, Neuza de Matos, Victor Borges, Isaltina Lucas and Adriano Maleiane.
