Africa-Press – Mozambique. One person died, this Wednesday, after being attacked by a crocodile on the banks of the Púnguè River, in the district of Nhamatanda, in Sofala.

The incident took place in Matenga, when the 60-year-old victim was bathing in the river.

The chairman of the Matenga Natural Resources Management Committee, Amad Cadeado, describes the situation as worrying, since attacks by crocodiles are increasing in recent months in the region.

Amad Cadeado explains that given the insufficiency of water supply sources in the locality of Matenga, the only alternative for the inhabitants is the Púnguè River.

At the moment, according to the official, awareness-raising actions are underway in the communities to take precautionary measures when going to the river.

In addition to attacks by crocodiles, residents of Matenga are also struggling with incursions by buffalo and elephants from Gorongosa National Park.
