Africa-Press – Mozambique. The United Nations Spotlight Initiative is, as part of a global campaign, this Wednesday launching three photographic exhibitions that aim to contribute to “eliminating all forms” of violence against women and girls in Mozambique.
“In this exhibition we show just a little of what we know is possible when we invest, together, in the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls in Mozambique,” the promoters say in a statement.
The exhibition entitled “NO to Violence Against Women and Girls” will be on display from Wednesday until December 10 at the Fernando Leite Couto Foundation, at the Brazil-Mozambique Cultural Centre and at the Handicrafts, Flowers and Gastronomy Fair (Feima) in Maputo, the Mozambican capital.
The photographs aim to “bring closer the daily lives of women and men who have seen their lives touched by the Spotlight Initiative”.
Under the theme “Economic Empowerment for Women”, the photographs to be exhibited at the Fernando Leite Couto Foundation portray women who had their well-being and self-esteem improved after participating in the project’s initiatives.
At Feima, the exhibition on “Raising Awareness for the Elimination of Gender-Based Violence” portrays the work done by activists and mentors who “bring essential information” about respect for women’s rights to 13 districts in four provinces of the country.
At the Centro Cultural Brasil Moçambique, the Spotlight Initiative exhibits “Positive Masculinities” through photographs that capture the expressions of men who became defenders and mentors of women, “transforming lives, families and communities”.
“We are not ignorant, we just need information. We need to know more about gender-based violence,” says Estefânia Eduardo, one of the beneficiaries of the Spotlight initiative, quoted in the statement.
The results achieved in Mozambique in the fight against violence will also be presented, “through the voice and stories of the participants in the program”.
The Spotlight project, launched in Mozambique in 2019, is being implemented in 13 districts in the provinces of Gaza, Manica, Nampula and Cabo Delgado, and aims to eliminate sexual and gender violence and premature unions, and promote sexual rights and reproductive health of women and girls.
In 2021, the Spotlight Initiative reached 1.3 million people directly and more than 12 million indirectly through, among other mechanisms, promoting change in social norms and providing sexual and reproductive health services.
