Mozambique: Students likely to lose vacations to compensate for suspension of classes

Africa-PressMozambique. Minister of Education and Human Development (MINEDH), Carmelita Namashulua, said this Thursday that adjustments will have to be made to the 2021 academic calendar to compensate for the recurring suspension of classes.

The minister highlighted that the decision to suspend face-to-face classes was taken to safeguard the health and well-being of students, although it has caused constraints.

“At sector level, we are giving specific treatment to these cases. As a solution, we will manage all available free spaces, such as the vacation period. Vacations can be used to make up for the period when classes are interrupted,” she explained.

The minister said that this solution was not new and should not be seen as a negative, since it arose from the decision to ensure that the Covid-19 pandemic did not expand in schools and destroy all the sector’s efforts.

Asked about the effect of recurrent interruptions on the quality of teaching and learning, Minister Namashulua said that the sector, in the midst of so much uncertainty, was committed to ensuring that the process ran as smoothly as possible, taking into account the circumstances and the pressure that the sector is subjected to.

“We are managing the teaching-learning process in an emergency situation. We are managing calmly, following the protocol established by the health sector. We are moving forward one step at a time. We will continue to provide all necessary information while complying with the school calendar,” she concluded.

Minister Namashulua was speaking on the sidelines of the presentation of tablets to teachers and school managers who had excelled in the implementation of the Telescola and Rádio-Escola programmes.
