Africa-Press – Mozambique. The manager of a guest house in southwestern Johannesburg was brutally murdered during a violent robbery on Wednesday (11-01) morning, the owner of the establishment told Lusa on Thursday.
Domingos António Novela, a 46-year-old Mozambican man “was beaten to death with a cement beam”, guest-house owner Richard Pestana revealed.
The Portuguese-descent businessman, who owns several commercial establishments, explained that Domingos Novela “turned 46 in January, and was about to go on vacation to Mozambique next month to see his family and children”.
“He managed our guest house, and entered the establishment at 6:00 a.m. yesterday morning [Wednesday], while the robbery was taking place,” Pestana told Lusa.
The robbers stole “decorative items and bedding”, he said, adding that the South African police arrested two men in connection with the robbery at the guest house, located in Carletonville, next to the West Rand district, one of the largest gold mining areas in the world, about 80 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg, the economic capital of South Africa.
Concerning crime in the area, Pestana said it was “out of control, and fomented mainly by drug trafficking”.
In an SMS message to the community, the Portuguese Forum in South Africa, a non-governmental organization monitoring the interests of the Portuguese diaspora in the country, strongly condemned “the senseless murder of Domingos António Novela”, urging the South African authorities to see that “justice be done”.
